you are right, you do not need every accessory for the dslr to shoot video. i did not have a follow focus or a viewfinder eye piece. i used only a good tripod, no handheld. i also used a homemade pvc pipe dolly.

a few things tho...
i messed up a few takes pulling focus, so we had to do them again.
and i found it very hard to see the viewfinder on the back of the camera when shooting the low angles. i had to watch the clip after the take to be sure!

as for the low shot you are asking about.... i had my face pressed into the dirt to get that shot!

I enjoyed watching this short very much. Very well done!
I see you used a "naked" 5D. No Zacuto Viewfinder, no matte box, no follow focus. You proof that this stuff that costs almost as much as the 5D is not really neccessary.
I wonder though how you managed to pull focus using the tiny screen. I find that very, very hard to do. And please can you explain how you did the scene at 4:13? How did you fit between the floor and the actor and if you put the camera to the ground how did you focus without an external monitor?

just use a horizontal "elevator door" wipe. that is the easiest way to make letterbox. you must crop the image.

Tom I really liked your featured film
I mean it was great
I actually wanted to take the opportunity to ask you what is the best program that is it fast for latter boxing?
I mean
You know like
Putting those dark bars around the video
Cause on compressor I know you can do this but it would take a long time
I was wondering if there was any free software out there that would give you that letterboxing fast and easy without cropping the image…
If you use anything please let me know
I really appreciate it.

contact Jehu at http://www.jag35.com. you can buy the Canon EOS to Nikon adapter thru him. They are the "Made in China" no brand cheap ones, but they work fine.

Hello Joe.

I recorded the sound on the Zoom H4 recorder as a .wav file at 44.1kHz. I did not find any problems syncing up the voice/sound to the 5dmk2 video with these settings. I have not used Pluraleyes, but I am sure that if I continue to do more of this type of work, I will need a better way to sync up all my stuff.

thanks
Tom

Tom, the video was very inspirational indeed.

One quick question though, you mentioned in the post above that you are recording the sound separately with the Zoom H4 recorder? Do you have the detail info of the sound file recorded? I believe the 5D MKII was recording the audio at 16 bits at 48kHz? (I could be wrong with this), but are you recording the audio with the same settings on Zoom H4 as the 5D MKII?

Also, have you heard of something called Pluraleyes?

http://www.singularsoftware.com/pluraleyes/

It's made specifically for FCP, the technical support has been great, only wish it would be easier for me to sync up the sound from my LX-3 with M-Audio Microtrack audios....
