A quick early November update
I have been very busy with my television work lately and when I’m not shooting for broadcast, I am up in the mountains shooting astro-timelapses. I just wanted to post something new to my site because it has been a little while since my last post! I shot the picture above yesterday afternoon on the Swift River in New Hampshire with the Canon 5Dmk2. Awesome light at 4:30pm in the afternoon!
I fired off a few more shots with the Canon 5dmk2. A few of these are still images from a astro-timelapse I shot two nights ago. This really is an amazing camera. I am working all the home Bruins hockey games this winter and also sneaking off to shoot a documentary in Florida the first week of December. I will be working on another documentary that will take me all over the country during the next two months and I will blog as I work in different cities. Perhaps, if I have time, I can meet up with a few of you who follow my blog.
If you live in the New England area, tune into the New England Sports Network and check out the promos I shot for the hockey show, “The Instigators”. I used the Sony PMW-EX1 and Letus Ultimate to shoot a bunch of childhood pranks the TV show hosts played on each other. I hope to get some of this on my website soon. The promos are running around the clock during commercial breaks.
In other news, my parents moved to Arizona a few months back and they really want me to visit them! My Dad, in the picture above, is enjoying his “Arizona Freedom” with his Harley and some sort of assault rifle. He use to be a cop, but I think he is taking his retirement way too far!
I will also be pulling the trigger on a $60,000 camera package. I am still not certain if I will go RED ONE or Sony PDW-f800. I am leaning towards the Sony f800 and will post a blog on the strengths and weakness of both. I really could use your help on what I should buy. Your opinion could help sway my decision. I will be shooting more with the RED ONE in the up coming months. I am going to be shooting snowboarding in New Hampshire at 120 FPS and hope to shoot some winter storm stock footage at 4k. I am already planning a trip (vacation) this summer to the Vancouver area to downhill mountain bike Whistler B.C. I have always wanted to get out that way and I am putting time away to do it.
Finally, I have a few blogs that I keep promising all of you. I have all the pieces and I just need to sit down and put them all together. I have a blog half done talking about the new Cox Communications “HD Sprinter” remote television truck. This truck is using Sony PMW-EX3 cameras and Nipros fiber optic adapters to cover sports with multiple cameras in HD. Yes, that is a $50,000 Fujinon 42x 2/3 inch TV lens being mounted to an EX3 in the above picture! I also need to post a blog about the current state of live sports television and the new MSG TV New York NHL hockey truck. I have a big blog I need to do about the RED ONE camera and the 4k workflow with Adobe Premiere. Plus a ton of you are asking for details on the dolly that I use. I must take pictures of that to help you all build your very own!
My house at the top of the mountain. I am writing this blog from inside! The genny is almost out of gas and the batteries are dead since the solar panels don’t work anymore. I will have to replace them at some point. The satellite internet connection is spotty because the wind is howling outside. I wish this place had a bathroom.
I have been enjoying my days off! Taking pictures of my hand reflecting in a small pool of water trapped in a rotten hole of a tree in the middle of nowhere. Now where did I put my mountain bike?
It is also looking good that I will be at NAB 2010 this April. I am really looking forward to this, I had so much fun last year and made a lot of new friends in the television business. That is about it. Sorry that I have not kept this page updated. It is a lot of work. I just got around to answering 58 emails I have received through my website during the month of October. I hope some of the stuff I know can help you make better television and films. That is really why I spend my free time working on this website. -Tom November 15th, 2009 | Tags: Guilmette, RED ONE, Sony PDW-F800, Tom Guilmette, update | Category: Website Related

you are just too cool.
i just like to have fun. that is all. am i cooler than “no doubt”?
Before you take the Red One out for the snowboard shoot in New Hampshire you should really have a look at the ski film Eyes Wide Open Which is a truly amazing ski movie. There’s also not that many people that take a Red One all the way to the landing, and keeping a camera that big steady while jumping off kickers in the slope is not particularly easy. I think there is some shots of the athletes Tanner Hall and Travis Rice shot with a Red One to.
thanks andreas, i will check out eyes wide shut.
I really like the blog. It seems you have a lot of fun with your job, and as someone trying to get into video with a new 7D, I find the stuff you’re doing pretty inspiring. Did want to point out, however, that your dad isn’t holding an AK47, hes holding an AR15 or M4.
thanks richard, i have fixed the blog! as you can see, my dad is the gun expert…
I don’t know how it is out on the east coast, but everyone and their brother owns a red here in CO so rental rates are dropping and competition for gigs is a bit high. Plus it still is far away from being as reliably solid as any of the other pro cameras in that range.
Conversely I only know of one person with a f800 and I also know a lot of network shows are requesting them right now when they come in town.
What eng lens are you thinking of? I’d be really interested to see what a nanoflash hooked up to one of those bad boys does!
All that said, a red one with that new line of cooke lenses would also be a lot of fun!
thanks for the advice. lots of people want me to get the RED ONE, but i really want a real camera from broadcast. the F800 is in high demand, like you said, and right now i plan on buying one with a 4.5 fuji wide angle lens and a fuji 17x zoom lens. i will be testing the nanoflash this weekend and i will let you know what i think.
heh, well I’m sure whatever you pick you’ll have a lot of disappointed blog readers! btw those lenses are sick!
Man, you are just insane, Tom. So many projects going on!
yea, and i just got back to you now! sorry!
What would you say the advantages of the F800 are over the red (briefly). I don’t know much about it, would have thought the super 35mm sensor would be a plus since it gives you the DoF flexibility.
red one: 120 FPS, 4k, RED RAW color space
F800: real broadcast camera ergonomics, hi res b/w crt viewfinder, xdcam format, clients really want this camera now, letus b4 relay, letus ultimate and canon ‘L’ series glass for flim look, 24p, 60 fps
Hey Tom, I really appreciate your hard work and telling all of your fans what you’re up to. Also, thanks for all of your expertise and knowledge and for sharing it with us all.
One question, wondering if the F800 is more reliable?
Cheers.
yes, the f800 will do exactly what it is suppose to for many years right out of the box. the red one will be a money pit forever and require firmware updates. but it is the RED ONE.
Hi Tom
I already wrote to you in Vimeo!
i am getting a fan of your films and your work.
chris from Cologne (Germany)…
Maybe you will have a look on my
early beginning… late but ill to do it.
vimeo.com/pin8
i will check it out.
Tom stick with the F800. While the Red is great for eposodic and film work it doesn’t cut it for the work you do, ie broadcast. From an old network guy.
yea, that is the way i am leaning right now.
Tom I will say this If you are gonna pull the trigger….Red dose NOT speak Nativity into FCP as you well know. And you will hate yourself when you have a ton of video to transfer. Those XD drives are something your use working with and they are available @ your local “hardware” store getting you hands on some extra Red drives wont be that easy unless your buddies at Rule have some handy. And I bet you will want to get Scarlet or Epic when they finally come out. Then you can pull-off 3D at 120fps
yea, you are very right. a friend of mine ordered a red hard drive two months ago and still has not got it. as of now, i am leaning towards buying a sony pdw-f800 xdcam and later buying a scarlet to shoot my high speed experimental stuff. the f800 will pay the bill shooting my bread and butter work.
thanks for the advice tom!
