Capturing live music with Zoom H4 portable stereo recorder
I have owned the Zoom H4 for about a year and I have used it on many different projects. I have used it to record natural “wild” sound while shooting nature, specifically waterfalls. I have used it to capture audio inside the Boston Garden as the Celtics pulled the championship banner up into the rafters. I have used it as a separate sound recorder when using the Canon 5dmk2 digital SLR for sit down interview dialogue. I have even used it to record my own voice for the narration track on my website video blogs and documentaries.  Many people use the Zoom “H4″ or the newly updated “H4N” for recording live music. This small portable stereo recorder is perfect for creating bootlegs of concerts. I just used the H4 tonight at our annual Boston Television Freelancer Holiday Party, know as “Freelancerpalooza” or as some call it, “loserpalooza”. We have many talented people who work in the Boston television and film market and a few of them are able to play instruments and/or sing in a band. We all met up in Canton, Ma at the Neponset Grill for a few drinks and some music. Great turnout, many people showed up for a great time. Thanks to Bill Titus for his hard work putting it all together.
Here is a sample of what I captured tonight with the H4 audio recorder. I set the H4 to record a wav file at 44.1kHz and flipped the built in mic level to “low”. I used the built in stereo pair on the unit. The music was very loud and I placed the H4 on a table next to a glass of beer about five feet from the stage. This bar is quite small as the stage took up about a quarter of the room. The place was jam packed with people.
I also shot some single camera footy with the Canon 5dmk2 with a Canon 16-35mm f2.8 wide open at ISO 6400. This bar had almost no light and the only way I was going to capture anything would be to use this amazing DSLR shooting 1080p video. I will post a edited cut from Phantom Power’s set with Michael Narracci making a show-stopping appearance. And a guy named Pizza is in there too.
