Winter Classic NHL Hockey at Fenway Park – Set Day Behind the ScenesI just got back from Fenway Park and threw together a quick video blog from earlier today. I only shot video when it was snowing during a break in the setup. The day was long and the Canadian CBC show I am working on is quite large. We ran a bunch of cable today, some of it not working properly. We then had to run more cable. I have no idea how all this stuff will make it back to the truck when we tear out after the show. The hockey game being played tomorrow in Boston is like the “Superbowl of Hockey” as far as television goes. I did not capture how much equipment is currently inside the ballpark because I was caught in the Fenway Magic as the snow began to fall and the Bruins took the ice for the first time. It was just awesome. I wished that I had the day all to myself…just me, a camera and a lens with shallow depth of field …and maybe some dolly tracks… I am looking forward to covering the event tomorrow from the low right ice level hand held position for the Canadian broadcast feed. I will have the NBC shooter on my right and a Phantom high speed 12.1 camera on my left. I will be using the Sony HDC-1500 30FPS HDTV camera, but I wish I was doing puck follows at 1000 FPS with the Phantom! Plus, about thirty feet to my right will be two HDC-1500 optical block T-cameras mounted over/under using a prism to capture stereo 3D high definition television. Look at this blog if you are interested in reading more about 3D cameras for broadcast and the innovative company, 3ality Digital by clicking here. Lets hope the weather holds off and the stuff falling from the sky is snow, not rain. Thanks to Patrick, Pizza, Tom, Bob and Andre for making this video blog a cinematic success. 14 comments to Winter Classic NHL Hockey at Fenway Park – Set Day Behind the Scenes |

Wow! I’m so not looking forward to the college games we’re doing there next week. At least its always warm-ish in the truck. BTW, what were you shooting with?
the frozen fenway games will be fun! i got some great boots. merrell snowmotion 8 (very fitting for me) 400 gram primaloft. the camera i used was the panasonic lumix ZS3 point and shoot. the camera shoots 720p AVCHD lite hd video as well as great stills.
thanks for the video and happy new year.
happy new year!
Great footage.. and how lucky you are to be in this field of work!!!! I envy you
thanks for reading my website!
Outstanding, Tom! One of your best “reports”! You really make me miss doing live sports.
thanks steve. i will try to do more of these. lots of people seem to enjoy them.
Wow, Sooooo cool! Thanks for taking the time to put this up Tom! I’m watching the game right now!
did you see me on the right side with a camera on my shoulder the whole game?
My kids spent more of the game trying to spot you rather than watch the game. Looked like an awesome experience.
ha! yea, it was a lot of fun. fenway park looks very strange in the winter time. it was almost like a totally different venue.
Tom,
With all due respect, I can no longer get these videos to play smoothly from your blog. I wish you would stream them from VIMEO again. At least I could see them smoothly. I have a pretty decent DSL connection too so I’m not sure what is going on. It only seems to be videos direct from your blog that my system can’t play. Maybe its the encoding?
Anyway, for what it’s worth! I love your site and visit often but have been unable to play smoothly the last several videos you’ve posted. Can’t even let them buffer, they just hang up constantly.
we will work together to resolve this. i will send you a few different encodes to see what works best. sorry the videos don’t play well on your computer!
