Another option would be to invest in a nanoFlash. The nanoFlash uses the XDCAM codec but essentially "unthrottles" it. So you can record 4.2.2 280 Mbps if you like. LongGop or I Frame. You will need lots of CF cards though. The nanoFlash takes the HD SDI output from the camera which is uncompressed 4.2.2. Recording formats include .mov and .mxf

I would probably buy a PMW350. Because all you need is the 2/3" camera head and decent glass on the front. CMOS sensors will cover 99.9% of most of your subject matter without problems, and you will save you dollars for other pursuits

great points tony and i FULLY agree with you. i am still undecided on what camera to buy. my clients will decide. this is not a toy, but a money making machine. if it is just sitting around collecting dust, what is the point?

and if i am only taking it out to play and not make money, i will never get the return on my investment when the technology is no longer needed or wanted.

thanks for the comment and advice. it helps. :-)

unless your rich and do not mind a 40% - 60% hit on your investment do not buy anything.
some scary new stuff coming out in the next 6 months, keep your money in wood bricks and mortar.
the dust should have settled by jan next year..
this camera business is going to start getting brutal.
i hope mr jim redcam has deep pockets because he is going to have to change his scarlet tech specs again : )

As a recent F800 purchaser, I have once again paid out $120k Au. on my new kit, 4.5 Fuji and 7.6 Fuji zooms..etc
The Decision was made for me by THE BROADCASTERS who are MY clients...TRY and shoot a documentary in the field with a RED and data wrangel in the jungle or on a boat at sea...My Clients mostly international Broadcasters are all heading down the "Fast Workflow" route with FCP and XDCAM file bease media... SO if U shoot for Broadcasters in the next few years you will find them opting for the BluRay disk format for many reasons.. At this stage in Australia we are Just ahead of the Changeover but as a Freelancer I always have to stay 1 jump ahead and that is Why I bought the XD. Because SONY is always going to win in the Broadcast world..as they have since 1970's when Ampex tried to muscle in wit the VPR'1's...ASK YOUR CLIENTS WHAT FORMAT THEY WANT AND WORK BACKWARDS listen to your clients they are whre the money is !!! No ego here I would buy a RED or Phantom in a heartbeat, but it comes down to ergonomics and versatility for me. Good Luckguy !

Tom,
My company just got the F-800, I've used it for a few months now, wonderful camera! Highly recommend it. The under-over cranking features are nice, probably not as nice as 120, but 60 is fine for most things. I have shot all budget ranges with this camera, thinking of putting some primes on it down the road. The workflow into our Avids is easy, I love the optical disk as well. I don't think you will go wrong with it.

Peace out - Paul

Hi Tom - Very interesting thread here... All comes down to what you know you can make a living with and feel happy working with. I've got a F800 very new for sale and can offer you a nice price. You can contact me thru my website. Cam was purchased for a project that got postponed indefinitely. It's an amazing tool!... but I've already got a Panasonic HDX900 and works well for my clients.... (I'm also a 7D owner and fan www.vimeo.com/rnrelay).

Nice work!... Best Wishes

not sure when a phantom would pay off! but it would be great fun. i must remember that the camera is not a toy, it is vital for my income and a tool in my business model. thanks for the comment.
