I have been working with my new favorite camera system, the Vision Research Phantom HD GOLD. The camera shoots amazingly crisp high speed footage and I am using it to capture mountain bike riders around New England. Nick and I are working on a film that we hope to release sometime next year that will feature a lot of footage shot at over 1000 frames per second in full HD. We are using some sick film lenses like the Angenieux Optimo 17-80mm t2.2 zoom and a full set of Zeiss super speed primes.

The second tease we are releasing features Giant rider Alex Couture. I spend an afternoon with him at a local riding spot near North Conway New Hampshire. I captured a small bit of trail with Alex using the Phantom during golden hour. The music is by “The Whitest Boy Alive” and the track is called “Fireworks”.

This quick Phantom session is just a small portion if the super slow motion we plan to include in the up coming bike film, the “Missing Link“. The film is currently in production.

Nick Keating and I have been busy shooting New England athletes for a new film we are working on called “The Missing Link”. We have released more sick Phantom high speed footy in the above teaser. Check it out and let us know what you think! The music is by XX. The film was inspired by the artistically fresh new biking film called “Life Cycles”.

This is our first attempt at making a bike movie and so far, we have captured some amazing stuff. The hardest part of the job is finding time around our busy schedules to produce the film!

I have put together a website for “The Missing Link” using Wordpress. You can find the site at http://www.missinglinkfilm.com. It is a work in progress and I hope that it compliments the film in content and detail. It is also a place Nick and I can post production updates and behind the scenes vids.

The release date for the movie is unknown. We are continuing the production through this fall and winter. We plan to step it up summer 2011 and finish up the project for released in local theaters and on DVD.

Nick and I are looking for support from both sponsors and athletes. We need help funding this project and would love to get companies or vendors involved with this film. We are also looking for more local talented athletes who are interested in showing off their style in front of out high speed cameras.

Please visit The Missing Link Website Contact Page and drop us a line if you are interested in working with us. If you have some riding footy online, please include that in your message.

We want to thank Kessler Crane, Letus Direct, Vinten, O’Connor, Lite Panels, Anton Bauer, RULE Boston Camera, Fastec Imaging, Attitash Mountain and Highland Bike Park for their support.

I am working on a mountain biking film shot mostly in New Hampshire using high speed cameras. I was inspired by the guys at “Life Cycles” and their artistic style they bring to biking films. I have been granted the opportunity to use Fastec Imaging HiSpec high speed cameras and a Phantom HD GOLD to capture New England riding for an upcoming film called, “The Missing Link”.

Nick Keating and I are currently in production on this film shooting at Highland Mountain Biking Park in Northfield, New Hampshire. I am also shooting at Attitash Mountain in Bartlett, New Hampshire. We are working with local riders on this project and hope to have it completed early 2011.

More information to come, but check out the trailer at the top of this page. Special thanks to Dave Hand and family for giving me a place to sleep at night while shooting in the mountains! Big thanks to Matt at Fastec Imaging, Eric at Kessler Crane and Mike at Rule Boston Camera for equipment support. Also, thank you “Spunky” for your voice on the trailer.

Two of the guys I work with at a Boston television station joined me for a “business meeting” at a New Hampshire ski mountain. But we would not be skiing! We will be taking a “Daycation” (one day vacation) from work to have some fun with gravity.

Over the next two days, I am working with a World Cup downhill mountain biker to shoot a short documentary on the 17 year old kid and his riding. I am planning on using the Canon 5dmk2 and the Sony EX1 with Letus Ultimate to shoot the entire doc with prime lenses.

TJ and Jon asked if they could come up a few days before the shoot and ride whilst I tested a few pieces of gear for the weekend. I agreed as long as I was able to capture the entire day from my point of view…the Canon 5dmk2 DSLR bolted to the side of my head!

The Canon 5dmk2 easily mounts to a mountain bike helmet with just a metal angle bracket. I used an old Anton Bauer Hytron 50 for counterbalance. This battery did not power anything.

Before you watch the video, a few things I must add:

1. I set the aperture on the film lens (16mm f2.8 fisheye) to f8 or f11 to open up the depth of field. This was the first time I actually wanted a deep DOF to see everything from the first person point of view.

2. The exposure is a problem. I found that using Auto ISO works well in the sun, but when I travel into the shade, it just does not respond well to patches of bring sun all around. It is very dark. My way around this is to shoot the sunny open single track and the dark woods sections separately and with manual exposure.

3. I found the shutter to best work at about 1/100. Any faster and the shot is way to jittery. Plus with a slower shutter, you get a little motion blur and that seems to play well.

4. Wind noise. The Canon 5dmk2 does not have a windscreen on its built in mic. All the sound you hear on the video below was captured with the onboard mic built into the camera. I found that by placing a small piece of foam (from a Pelican Case) on the little mic holes in the camera body helps out a bit. It is very windy when you are going close to 50 miles an hour down a mountain!

5. Weight. This thing is heavy. The counterbalance weight spreads it out, but it kills the neck. I found that this old helmet is lacking proper padding to begin with, so the added weight makes it hurt even more.

6. Clearance. It is so easy to clip a tree with these things (expensive camera equipment) protruding off the side of your head. If the fisheye hits the bark at full speed whilst I’m leaning into a berm, it is game over!

So wish me luck tomorrow! I have no idea how I am going to keep up with a professional mountain biker. Should be fun tho.

Join TJ, Jon and myself as we take a single day vacation from the stresses of life. I call it a “Downhill Daycation”.

I will be testing a demo version of the ContourHD “wearable” HD video camera. But I have not received it yet from the company. I have a shoot this weekend with a World Cup downhill mountain biker. So I had to come up with something!

I am going to be the “chase bike”. I will be trying very hard to keep up with a fast mountain biker as he rips down a mountain.

I wanted to mount my 5Dmk2 digital SLR to an old motocross helmet, so I did. I used corner brace metal as the mount and just bolted them to the helmet. I decided that a counter balance was necessary since the camera was a bit heavy. I used an old, dead Anton Bauer Hytron 50 camera battery.

I first tried a 24mm f2.8 Canon lens on the 5Dmk2. I found this was not quite wide enough. I next tried a 16mm Nikon (with Canon EOS to Nikon adapter ring) f2.8 fisheye. This worked great. Take a look at the video link at the bottom of the page for a test of the system.

The light was fading and I just managed to get this done late this afternoon. I hope to test this more on Thursday at the mountain in much better light. I will also experiment with higher shutter and closing the aperture on the fish eye for a deeper DOF.

Watch a short little video I put together as a test of the expensive and heavy 5Dmk2 POV camera. I am working out the bugs for the big mtb film session this weekend.

I have been looking for a high definition point of view “mini-cam” to cover action sports. My buddy Aaron, sent me a link to a new product made by Twenty20 that appears to fill a void to help cover action from the athletes point of view. And it is very inexpensive bit of gear!

I had been following my mate from the UK, Den Lennie at Tapeless Made Easy and he recently tested out a Sony HD mini-cam. You can find his video blog here. The new Sony HXR-MC1 records 1080i in AVCHD format on memory stick duo cards. This camera even has a little LCD screen to view the video and the recorded files. Nice, but it costs $2700! It is a high end Sony product, but do you really need to spend that for a “crash” camera? You can find it at B&H Video here.

Now there is a cheap alternative for extreme action sports fans. And the guys who try to capture all the sick action.

I found some interesting information on how this camera came about and the guys who created it.

The story about the Twenty20 company began in 2003, when two undergrads from the University of Washington, Marc Barros and Jason Green, put together a simple helmet camera to record their skiing adventures. They won third place in a U of Washington business model competition and took the award money to rent a place to start making the Twenty20 Helmet Camera full time.

They went through a bunch of camera designs since 2003 and they are finally offering an affordable, wearable and decent quality HD mini-cam POV camera. And best of all, the camera only costs $279.99!

I have not used this camera yet, and it is not due to ship until the end of July, but I am planning on contacting Twenty20 to see if I can try out a demo. I want to use it on a project that I will be working on with a bunch of talented mountain bikers from New England later this summer. The video will chronicle the riders as they rip down a remote and non-lift assisted single track line in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I will be shooting the entire video with the Canon 5dmk2 Digital SLR and I want to mix in ContourHD camera content throughout the short MTB documentary.

Another interesting twist to this camera is the fact that the website where it can be found, http://www.vholdr.com, offers a video showcase of POV action films. The Twenty20 company obviously wanted “community” to be part of their business model. I am looking forward to watching how this idea takes off and I feel that these guys are on the right track.

A few things to mention about this camera, that I have found by researching it. First of all, it is tiny! Look at the picture above to get the measurements. This camera will not weigh you down and when mounted to a helmet or bike frame, the athlete will not even know it is there.

The ContourHD does not have a viewfinder. You simply must point the thing and hope the framing is correct. Not really a big deal, since this exclusion makes for a cheaper price tag and one less thing to get busted during that inevitable, ugly crash.

This camera also only records HD at 720p not 1080. But… you can record in 60fps at standard def, so it is possible to record high speed at a lower resolution. Nice option, for a cheap POV.

The camera records onto inexpensive microSD memory cards and even includes a 2gb card that gives you about an hour of HD and 2 hrs of SD video.

The HD lens is nice and wide, at 135 degrees with no zoom and the body is water resistant made of aluminum and fiberglass. I will need to get my hands on this camera to verify a good build, but again, for the price this thing is disposable.

The ContourHD is powered by a removable and replaceable Li-ion battery and you can record up to 2hrs in SD mode. I am not sure how long you can record in HD with the battery, it is not stated on the website. You charge the camera to full in about 3hrs using USB to computer like an iPod. You can buy an optional a/c plug in battery charger as well.

The camera comes with “Easy Edit” software and works with the PC and the Mac. You use the USB 2 cable to download the h.264 .mov files to the computer. Like the Canon 5dmk2, you will probably want to convert these files to ProRes 422 before you edit with the current version of Final Cut Pro. Editing native h.264 files are very clunky and like to beat up FCP!

In the box you get the camera, the 2gb microSD card, a goggle mount, a flat surface mount, a rechargeable battery and the USB cable. Again, all this for $279.99. That is pretty reasonable for the quality that this little versatile camera can put out. You can find this camera (currently pre-order only) at B&H Video by clicking here.

The Twenty20 guys mounted this camera to downhill mountain bike rider Brin Atkinson as he chased Lars Sternberg at the April 2009 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California.

I hope to get my hands on one of these cameras very soon. When I do, I will post another blog with video to show you how the world’s first wearable high definition camera stacks up.
