This is my first film shot with the Canon 5DmkII digital SLR. This camera is simply amazing and it is really changing the “film-look for video” game.

The idea for this film came to me a few days ago. I wanted to shoot in an old, abandoned house with no electricity. My goal was to light the entire film with available light and light from a single oil lamp. The low light capability of this camera is unlike anything I have ever used before. This camera is amazing when shooting with the light from a single flame.

I called my friend, Adam, and asked him if he would meet me at on old vacant farm house in Attleboro, Massachusetts so that we could shoot a film.

We brought a few props, like the old tin, oil lamp and photograph for the film and shot non-stop from 11am to 5pm. We started outside in the rain and then moved into the dank dirt-floor basement. Later in the afternoon, we shot upstairs in the decaying house.

All sound was recorded separately with the Zoom h4 stereo recorder with the built in microphones.

I used Vinten tripods, and especially loved my new Vinten baby legs when shooting with the Vision 3 (spring#1) to get the low angles.

I have posted pictures and a short blog about the making of this film. You can find that by clicking here.

I edited this project with very little grading to the final film with Final Cut Pro and Magic Bullet Looks. If you have any questions about the Canon 5DmkII or the making of this film, please comment below.

UPDATE! I have also posted the untreated rough cut of the 1960 farm house flashback. This rough cut includes reference audio directly from the 5Dmk2 microphone. I figured this might be helpful to those who want to hear how the built in mic sounds. Link: http://vimeo.com/5302278

  • This is one of the best shot short films I’ve ever seen….especially knowing that it was with DSLR and ambient light! I was in the market to upgrade from the Nikon D300 to the D700, but I might look closer at Canon’s line-up now that I’ve seen these video results. Your eye for capturing great images is wonderful and I look forward to checking out more of your work.

    Take care,
    Brandon

Great movie – you had me hanging ’till the end! I was wondering how hard it is to pull focus on the 5D Mk2. I have a Nikon D90 – I’ve seen some great videos online, but I find critical focus to be kind of tough to master. Also, the exposure control looks awesome. When the actor blew out the lamp, you went from flame to no flame, and then when you panned camera right following the actor out of the basement, you’re hit with the bright sunlight coming in through the doorway, yet the exposure seemed to be correct for the scene all the way through – was the camera adjusting for exposure automatically? My D90 has a nasty stair-step auto exposure compensation in movie mode, though I can lock it. Your footage seemed nicely lit through that whole scene.

The only constructive criticism I’d offer (don’t get me wrong – I’m a long ways from this level of work) is your quick pan to the candle showed the CMOS jelly pan effect. Don’t know if this was intentional or not. Do you think you could have eliminated that effect if you panned slower, and then sped it up in post?

    Aloha,

    • hitting spot on focus is very hard. i miss it most of the time! that is what multiple takes are for. if i were doing this right, i would have a focus puller and i would measure out the distances to the film plane!

i love the two light sources in the basement scenes. the oil lamp is bright red and the outdoor light from the doorway is cold blue.

that cmos jelly pan effect did not really bother me too much. i did notice it. i was the only other person in that room so that candle “blowout” take was me! i then whipped the camera to adam. later in post, that was played in reverse. i could have panned slower and sped it up in post i suppose.

you know what bothers me most, the warm tones in the dining room scene and the colder tones in the flashback. i could have graded better. also, the audio in the dining room scene with the older couple eating soup is terrible.

      thanks for watching!

    Hello Tom,
This is a amazing. I like it very much.
I’m a new 5D user. Can you give me details of the settings (ISO/SHUTTER/AV) on the camera, when you filmed?. This may be help for me to learn about d5.

I want to know the settings on the following clips.
    * When the young man is introduced.
    * When the man comes into the house and take the equipment on the table.

I am waiting for your response. And wish you continued success with filming.

  • Dear Tom,
I enjoyed your short film and wonder if I can ask your opinion about the canon 5D mk 11 SlR camera. I am a director and will be shooting a feature soon( budget of around 1.5 mil uk pounds.) I had planned to shoot on the Red system before I heard about this camera. The thing is I love small cameras and shooting with available light. Do you think this camera would be suitable for this project? Keep up the good work.
    best wishes from Scotland.

    • if you plan on projecting your film on a huge screen, shoot on red. if you are going to send your film to dvd or even blu-ray use the 5dmk2. the 5dmk2 also looks great on the web!

Great work! my only question is, have you have any problems with magic bullet and final cut pro? and is magic bullet looks a good way to go?

    • magic bullet looks no longer works on my mac osX snow leopard. you must have looks 1.2 for the new operating system.

i like magic bullet looks, but you can do some great color grading in final cut pro by just using the 3-way color correction filter. i use that quite a bit to crush the black and bring up saturation. i also use the color wheels to fix problems in white balance between different camera shots.

Love the Burial Site Video! Please HELP me with a quesiton!!
I filmed on my 5d converted to ProRes 422. I have a sequence on final cut of 30p. Here is my issue….

Getting best DVD quality and making sure my audio is synced up.

I used idvd and 1) the quality looks really bad, 2) Audio is out of sync. But On Final Cut pro, it is in sync.

    Any tips? thanks!!!!!
