Burial Site
This is my first film shot with the Canon 5DmkII digital SLR. This camera is simply amazing and it is really changing the “film-look for video” game. The idea for this film came to me a few days ago. I wanted to shoot in an old, abandoned house with no electricity. My goal was to light the entire film with available light and light from a single oil lamp. The low light capability of this camera is unlike anything I have ever used before. This camera is amazing when shooting with the light from a single flame. I called my friend, Adam, and asked him if he would meet me at on old vacant farm house in Attleboro, Massachusetts so that we could shoot a film. We brought a few props, like the old tin, oil lamp and photograph for the film and shot non-stop from 11am to 5pm. We started outside in the rain and then moved into the dank dirt-floor basement. Later in the afternoon, we shot upstairs in the decaying house. All sound was recorded separately with the Zoom h4 stereo recorder with the built in microphones. I used Vinten tripods, and especially loved my new Vinten baby legs when shooting with the Vision 3 (spring#1) to get the low angles. I have posted pictures and a short blog about the making of this film. You can find that by clicking here. I edited this project with very little grading to the final film with Final Cut Pro and Magic Bullet Looks. If you have any questions about the Canon 5DmkII or the making of this film, please comment below. UPDATE! I have also posted the untreated rough cut of the 1960 farm house flashback. This rough cut includes reference audio directly from the 5Dmk2 microphone. I figured this might be helpful to those who want to hear how the built in mic sounds. It’s the middle of the night over here. My little daughter is finally sleeping (she has a bad cold) and I was watching over her while she was falling asleep. Listening to some iPod music and reading Tweets. Saw your tweet and URL on my iPod screen. Couldn’t play the video on my iPod Touch, so I had to get the MacBook.
Started watching the movie….waiting for a dark secret coming from that little box….and than the card comes out….MAN! I had to hold my breath for at least five minutes. Otherwise I would have woke up the whole family laughing!
I hope you are willing to bring out more info about how you made the shots. Thank you all for the great story. Really cool promotion video.
Thanks Gert, I see you found the little story I posted in my blog about the making of this film. I have even more pictures taken with my camera during production. I will try to post them soon. Thanks for watching!
I thought this was going to have a good ending, but instead of philipbloom.co.uk, I was disappointed.
Haha, Still want to shoot lighthouses on the cape?
Zac
Thanks Zac. I could have put Philip’s business card in the tin, but were would be the fun in that!
I want to shoot down the Cape this summer. I will let you know when I decide to head down there.
Man, I’m so jealous of that 5D!!! I can’t believe that shot was all from the flame! Awesome stuff. Great ending too! Let me know when you do your next shoot!
Bill
yea, the low light functionality is a big selling point of this camera… and it takes 21.1 megapixel stills too!
Tom that was awesome you are a marketing GENIUS!!!
Love the dolly work and playing around with the focus. Very nice!
Yah, I had to laugh!
Its a great hook, and the technology you use is way cool.
I think your ability to tell a story and shape it with pictures is something beyond the “stuff” you use. You’re a good story-teller, with an imagination to match. Keep up the good work!
Hey great shots man! After watching this I’m thinking seriously about getting the 5D mkII.
It was a funny ending, gotta give you that.
You’re Killin’ Me…
Tom,
super job great pacing and editing, the rain really added to the mood. Some camera!!!
What an ending, you see what happenend to Michael Jackson don’t let this go to your head.
Ray.
thanks ray. i dont think my voice can go as high as mj’s did anyway. rip michael.
Good work
Niiiiiice!!
I feel as though you didn’t spend enough time on the awesomer side of the business card :-p
Unbelievable that the entire thing was shot with a ’still frame camera.’ So awesome.
Nice to meet Mr. and Mrs. Guilmette too
hey craig, you can kinda see the picture on the back of the card! so when you gonna get a 5dmk2?
Awesome job! Is your 5D updated with the new firmware? Now that it has the ability to manually adjust exposure, I’m thinking of getting one.
great camera. i waited for the firmware update before i bought the camera. i still had to do the update myself, it was very easy!
You never cease to amaze me! This film was great, (and the Canon camera looked really good too). Once again, Tom, nice work!
Simply Amazing yet again! I absolutely love your dolly moves while focusing. Is that tough to do with the Mark II? I so want one of those cameras! I want you to shoot my wedding!
!
chris,
i am panning, tilting, dollying and pulling focus all at the same time! that is what multiple takes are for! adam was great every time, so it was just me who screwed up mostly.
This is a great short film! I love the way you did the cinematography. I have the 5DM2 and Zoom H4 too. Mostly doing still photography for weddings. I’m in love with the camera and its capabilities!
